Circle of the Seasons - Winter

Winter is the quiet season: no birdsong, no buzzing insects or, except in conifer stands, of breeze in the trees. There may be days when the wind howls or there’s the soft sound of snow sifting down, but on the whole winter is quiet. It may be quiet, but winter is not without interesting things to see in the natural world.

Since there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing, it was time to go outside and see what the winter may bring.

By the time you read this post meteorological winter will be over and the first signs of spring will be apparent. The other three installments of the Circle of the Seasons were posted here, here and here.
As in those earlier posts, any photographs from my camera traps are noted at the end.

And so winter came to a gradual end as the days lengthened, the earliest spring migrants arrived and the snow gradually melted. There may be cold and snowy days ahead (as this is posted on a morning in early March it's 12°F outside and the ground is snow covered), but spring is on the way and the Circle of the of the Seasons is complete.
